Reorganization of the Board
Superintendent Peitzmeier called the meeting of School Board #62 to order on Monday, January 11, 2021 at 6:30 p.m.
Open Meetings Act
Notice of this meeting was properly published in a newspaper of general circulation by advance Public Notice with notice and advance agenda given to all members of the board prior to the meeting date.
NOTE: The meeting was broadcast on Facebook live @sstrojans.org
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Roll Call
A call of roll showed all members present: Laura Schnoor, Mike Fischer, Malia Nemecek, Don Beck, Cory Schlueter and Andrea Vacha
Others Present
Supt. Joe Peitzmeier, Principal Brad Stithem, Recording Secretary Sharon Meyer
Election of President
Superintendent Peitzmeier called for nominations for president, Nemecek nominated Schnoor for president and moved that nominations cease. Schlueter seconded and motion carried 5-yes, 1-abstain (Schnoor).
Schnoor was elected President of the Board of Education for 2021 on 1 ballot, receiving 5 votes, a majority of those voting.
Election of Vice President
President Schnoor called for nominations for vice president, Vacha nominated Fischer for vice president, Nemecek seconded and motion carried 5-yes, 1-abstain (Fischer).
Fischer was elected Vice President of the Board of Education for 2021 on 1 ballot, receiving 5 votes, a majority of those voting.
Election of Secretary
President Schnoor called for nominations for secretary, Fischer nominated Nemecek for secretary, Schlueter seconded and motion carried 5-yes, 1-abstain (Nemecek).
Nemecek was elected Secretary of the Board of Education for 2021 on 1 ballot, receiving 5 votes, a majority of those voting.
Approval of Treasurer
Schlueter moved to approve Tim Wobkin as the SSCS Treasurer for 2021. Nemecek seconded and motion carried 6-yes.
Welcoming of Visitors
President Schnoor welcomed 1 visitor. No comments.
Informational Reports
Board Members – nothing reported
Principal Stithem reported on the following items:
- Drop and add courses completed.
- In the process of ordering sample text books for Social Studies and Science for the 2021-22 school year.
- Thank you goes out to Mrs. Kafonek and the help of Kay Rathjen for completing all the cataloging of the library books in the school’s electronic system.
- Reminded staff about the proper ways to meet and greet visitors.
- Elementary staff and students will be doing their 1st remote learning technology take home activity on January 20th and 21st.
- Start of Seconded Semester. Welcome Back.
Superintendent Peitzmeier reported on the following items:
- Legislative Issues:
-The legislature convened January 6th.
-Lynn Walz selected as Education Chair
- Finance:
- Curriculum:
-Staffing Update – Hired Cassandra Hoffman as elementary para.
- Facilities:
-Trane: Dave Raymond is now with Facility Advocates.
-Stage Lighting
-Commons Ceiling
-Demo Project – Received bids from Icon Improvement and Facility Advocates
-Asbestos removal – January 14th
- Workshop/Meetings:
-Midland College Interview Day on January 20th
-PFI meeting in Kearney on February 5th
- Miscellaneous:
-Congratulations to last year’s yearbook staff. Third year Winners of the NE HS Press Assoc Cornhusker Award
- Prom will be held on April 24th.
-Congratulations to Cailey Stout – Academic All-State Softball
-January 20th marks the 6th Annual Nebraska Loves Public Schools Day
- Updated the Board on Superintendent attendance/absences
Action Items:
Approval of the Consent Agenda:
Fischer moved to approve the Consent Agenda as presented which includes the approval of the agenda, the December 14, 2020 and January 6, 2021 Minutes, Treasurers (attachment 1) Financial (attachment 2) reports and the actual General Fund expenses (attachment 3), and placed them on file. Beck seconded and motion carried 6-yes.
Schlueter moved that Scribner Bank be designated as the depository for all School District #62 checking accounts for 2021. Nemecek seconded and motion carried 6-yes.
Vacha moved that regular meetings of the Scribner-Snyder Board of Education be held on the second Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the months of April to November and 6:30 p.m. in the months of December to March. Schlueter seconded and motion carried 6-yes.
Nemecek moved that the Board of Education authorizes and grants the Superintendent or his designee authority to represent the District in all matters relating to local, state, and federal programs and funds, such as but not limited to Title Programs, ESU #2 Co-op purchasing of supplies, ESU #2 co-op for Title 1 services, etc. Vacha seconded and the motion carried 6-yes.
Nemecek moved that the Rustler Sentinel be designated as the official newspaper for the SSCS School District. Fischer seconded and motion carried 6-yes.
Nemecek moved to designate the attorneys of Perry Law Firm as the district legal counsel. The District reserves the right to use the legal services of Legal Counsel for the Nebraska Association of School Boards, as may be needed. Schlueter seconded and motion carried 6-yes.
Vacha moved to approve the membership in the Nebraska School Boards Association. Beck seconded and motion carried 6-yes.
Vacha moved to approve 2 applications for the Early Retirement Incentive Program. Nemecek seconded and motion carried 6-yes.
Schlueter moved to extend FFCRA-like leave through March 31, 2021 or until staff receives the COVID vaccination. Anyone declining the vaccination is not eligible for the extended FFCRA-like leave. Vacha seconded and motion carried 6-yes.
Discussion Items:
COVID-19 Discussion - Supt. Peitzmeier updated the Board on COVID related absences and on the process of scheduling staff vaccinations.
Committee Assignments for 2021 - President Schnoor appointed Committees.
Board Goals – Board Retreat to set goals will be held on January 27th at 5:00 p.m.
Executive Session:
Nemecek moved to enter executive session at 7:32 p.m. for the purpose of discussing personnel when necessary to prevent needless injury to the reputation of a person and such person has not requested a public meeting; and for the protection of the public interest. Schlueter seconded and motion carried 6-yes.
Vacha moved to resume Regular Session at 7:44 p.m. Beck seconded and motion carried 6-yes.
Regular Session:
Nemecek moved to approve an offer to Principal Stithem’s contract for the 2021-2022 school year with the proposed compensation package. Fischer seconded and motion carried 6-yes.
Prior to adjournment the board discussed the possibility of moving the February board meeting.
Adjournment:
There being no further business on the agenda of this meeting, President Laura Schnoor adjourned the meeting at 7:49 p.m.
